How Many PRP Injections Are Needed For Hair?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an innovative treatment that uses your own blood to treat hair loss. PRP injection therapy for hair works using your own plasma that is run through a centrifuge to increase the concentration of platelets in it. It is then injected into your scalp to promote hair growth through something known as growth factors. These growth factors promote cellular healing, which can increase hair density and strength.
For an initial treatment plan, multiple PRP injections for hair will be required over the course of a few weeks. Typically, a patient will have four sessions over four weeks, depending on the severity of hair loss. The exact treatment will be highly dependent on the severity of your hair loss and upon your doctor’s recommendations. Some patients may require more injections if they have severed hair loss.
How Well Does PRP Therapy Work?
PRP injections for hair loss have been shown to be incredibly effective as a long-term treatment. PRP shots are injected directly into the scalp, usually into bald spots or other trouble areas. These injections encourage the body to produce growth factors which can strengthen hair follicles and help form new blood vessels, which help promote natural hair growth.
Patients who receive PRP therapy typically start to notice some results after a few weeks, but visible, concrete results begin to appear after three months. Many patients will see a regrowth of anywhere between 30-40% of their natural hair. Additionally, PRP can make your hair stronger and thicker. PRP is most effective when you first start to notice thinning of the hair, the quicker you seek treatment, the more likely that the results will be better and give you stronger, thicker hair.
Are PRP Hair Results Permanent?
PRP hair loss treatment may provide some permanent results for some people, but this is rare and oftentimes, people will need a touch-up injection to maintain their hair regrowth. The positive results from PRP therapy will typically last for a year to two years. Commonly, your doctor will recommend that you receive a touch-up treatment annually.
Is PRP Hair Therapy Painful?
Typically, PRP hair therapy injections are not painful. A very fine needle is used, and a topical anesthetic is used to numb the scalp prior to an injection. There may be mild pain at the injections site, and you may experience some side effects such as redness, swelling, or tenderness. Additionally, some patients have had mild headaches after treatment. Typically, these symptoms do not last long and are resolved without any treatment.
One benefit of PRP for hair growth is that, because it uses your own blood as a treatment, the chances for other side effects is extremely low especially compared to things such as surgical options.
Is PRP Better Than a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure and comes with all of the risks associated with surgery. A hair transplant works by harvesting hair follicles from areas of the body where hair growth is still sufficient and transplanting them into areas of balding on the scalp. The procedure can cause pain in the scalp area and can result in some down time for the patient to recover.
Hair transplants can take anywhere between six to nine months for the full results to take effect. Hair transplants are most effective for people who have ample donor hair follicles and are free of medical conditions that pose a risk for surgery.
PRP, on the other hand, is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that uses your own blood and body’s natural healing power to promote hair growth. The means that you avoid the risks of a surgical procedure, don’t require any down time to recover, and the risk of side effects is minimal. Additionally, you likely will start to see evident results in hair growth quicker than you would with a hair transplant.
Whether PRP therapy is better than a hair transplant will really be a decision between you and your doctor. If you want a treatment that is non-invasive and gives you results quicker, PRP may be a better option, however, if you have severe hair loss, a hair transplant may be necessary.
