Does Hypertension Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition that affects your body’s ability to properly pump blood throughout your body, including to your penis. It is estimated that around half of all men between the ages of 40 to 70 years old with high blood pressure suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) to some degree.

How Does Hypertension Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Hypertension can cause erectile dysfunction in the following ways:

  • Blood Flow – high blood pressure prevents the arteries that carry blood to the penis from operating properly and inhibits the muscles in the penis from relaxing, making it difficult for enough blood to flow into the penis to achieve and maintain an erection.
  • Low Testosterone – Many men with high blood pressure also suffer from low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a key hormone contributing to a man’s ability to get aroused and get an erection.
  • Medication – Many common blood pressure medications can contribute to erectile dysfunction. About 25% of all ED cases are related to some kind of medication.
  • Psychological Factors – Many men with high blood pressure may experience anxiety about their health. This anxiety can make it difficult to become aroused thus making it harder to achieve an erection.

Treatment Options for Erectile Dysfunction

Hypertension related erectile dysfunction is a treatable condition. Usually, the first choice for treating erectile dysfunction is ED medications such as Viagra or Cialis. These medications work by increasing blood flow to the penis and help you achieve and maintain an erection. A doctor will want to evaluate you overall health, including your cardiovascular health, before prescribing these medications, so be sure to discuss this treatment option with your doctor. Many men suffering from high blood pressure also suffer from low testosterone. Low testosterone can be treated with Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), helping to bring testosterone levels back up to normal. TRT can be administered in a few different ways including injection, topical creams, and oral medications. Optimal testosterone levels make it easier to achieve and maintain an erection. Another option for ED treatment is through a platelet rich plasma therapy known as the P Shot. The P Shot works using your own plasma which is run through a centrifuge to increase the concentration of the platelets in the plasma. The P Shot is then injected into your penis. This platelet rich plasma works with the body to release growth factors that play a key role in increasing blood flow to the penis which can help treat erectile dysfunction.
