What is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s Disease is a condition that is caused by fibrous scar tissue that can lead to curved and painful erections. Because penises can vary in both size and shape, having a bit of curvature in your penis isn’t necessarily a cause of concern but Peyronie’s Disease can cause a significant bend that is painful and may make it difficult to get an erection or have sex. Peyronie’s Disease rarely fixes itself and will need to be treated by a medical professional.

What are the Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease?

There are many signs and symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease with a curvature in the penis, either with or without an erection, being the most common. However, Peyronie’s Disease presents other symptoms such as hard lumps on one or more sides of the penis, pain during sex or during an erection, and changes in the shape of the penis.

Peytonie’s Disease can even lead to erectile dysfunction making it difficult for you to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it might be wise to check with your doctor about Peyronie’s treatment.

How Common is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s Disease is more common in men than you might think. It is estimated that around one in eleven men will get Peyronie’s Disease of some degree during their lifetimes and it is more common in men over the age of 40.

Causes of Peyronie’s Disease

The most common cause of Peyronie’s Disease is repeated injuries to the penis. These injuries are most commonly caused during sex such as by bending the penis during sex or pressure from your partner’s pelvic bone.

It can also be caused by accidents such as sport’s injuries or any trauma to the penis. Peyronie’s Disease may also occur in men with an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the cells in the penis causing inflammation and scar tissue.
